Dynamite Entertainment unveiled five new major comics franchises which will be published in 2024 and beyond via its agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products (WBDGCP).
The five titles in the Dynamite's comics pipeline are Ben 10, Captain Planet and the Planeteers, Thundarr the Barbarian, The Herculoids, and Dynomutt & Blue Falcon. They have already tapped Tom Sniegoski, of Vengeance of Vampirella fame (see "'Vengeance of Vampirella'"), to pen The Herculoids comics, which are based on the Hanna-Barbera space barbarian family.
"I know this is gonna sound stupid, but ever since I was a little Sniegoski-ling, I've been in love with these characters forever," said Sniegoski. "I can't tell you how excited I am for this project and can't wait to show the fans what I've got planned."
The Thundarr the Barbarian and Dynomutt & Blue Falcon comics are also based on series from the Hanna-Barbera and Ruby Spears animation vaults. Thundarr features a post-apocalyptic wasted Earth, conceived by Steve Gerber, who had significant runs at Marvel Comics with The Avengers, Tomb of Dracula, and other series (see "Blade's Early Adventures"). Dynomutt and Blue Falcon are characters that are semi-Scooby Doo spinoffs that got their own cartoon as Dynomutt, Dog Wonder which ran for two seasons in the 70s.
The two probably most well-known IPs in this deal are Ben 10 and Captain Planet and the Planeteers. Ben 10 ran for six years on the cartoon network. The comics license had previously been with BOOM! Studios since 2018 (see "Ben 10"). Captain Planet and the Planeteers is, of course, one of the quintessential save-the-environment cartoons from the 90s. In 2016, Paramount and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions are in talks to produce a film based on the series (see "Captain Planet"). The movie project has since been on the backburner at Appian Way.
Dynamite will release more information about creative teams, story details, and release dates in the coming months.
