IDW Publishing announced during Comic-Con that it has inked a deal to continue its partnership with Paramount to publish Star Trek comics, an agreement that dates back to 2006 (see "IDW Boldly Goes").  The announcement comes ahead of their release of the milestone Star Trek #500 on September 4, 2024.

At the show, IDW announced a new Star Trek: Lower Decks ongoing series by writer Ryan North.  The comics will be episodic and each one will feature a different artist, starting with starting with Derek Charm for issue #1.  That first issue will be released on November 13, 2024, with a main cover by Charm, a variant by Megan Huang, and a 1:10 retailer incentive cover by Chris Fenoglio.

Lower Decks is my favorite Star Trek, and I have seen every single Star Trek there is to see, except for one episode I will never reveal,” North said in a statement accompanying the announcement.  “This raises the obvious question: will something in this comic contradict something that I missed in that one episode I never saw?  Thankfully the answer is no, because the entire Lower Decks team - both at IDW and Paramount - has been so amazing - supportive, clever, brilliant. We're making a big funny heartfelt book with huge sci-fi ideas, important character developments, tons of that Trek flavor, and a bunch of jokes, too."

North wrote the first Star Trek: Lower Decks miniseries, collaborating with artist Chris Fenoglio, in 2022 (see "Ryan North Announces 'Star Trek: Lower Decks' Comics"), and the collected edition was a best-seller in ComicHub shops (see "Top 20 Graphic Novels – May 2023").  North and Charm's Star Trek: Day of Blood—Shax's Best Day was nominated for the 2024 Eisner Award for Best Single Issue/One-Shot.

Paramount recently announced that Season 5 of the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks series would be the final season (see "'Star Trek'").
