Dark Horse Comics will release Moonshadow: The Definitive Edition - Expanded, a 528-page paperback at $29.99, in bookstores on May 6, 2025, and in comic shops on May 7, 2025.

Moonshadow was originally released as a 12-issue miniseries from Marvel Comics' Epic imprint in the 1980s, then republished by DC Comics' Vertigo imprint in the 1990s.  Dark Horse has declared the story "America's first fully painted graphic novel."  The art is by co-creator Jon J Muth (Silver Surfer, The Mystery Play), and it's written by J.M. DeMatteis (Spider-Man, Brooklyn Dreams) and lettered by Kevin Nowlan (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, Doctor Strange). The cover art is newly painted by Muth.

In addition to the original 12-issue series, including original covers, Moonshadow: The Definitive Edition - Expanded will also include concept art, creative team notes, script pages, and the followup novella Farewell, Moonshadow.  Moonshadow is an intergalactic coming-of-age story in which the title character escapes from a deep-space zoo and struggles to survive in a war-torn universe.  Writer DeMatteis describes the story as "Dickens' David Copperfield meets Siddhartha in space."

Dark Horse previously published the collection as a hardcover in 2019 (see "'Moonshadow' Rises Again").  That edition was nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Archival Collection/Project—Comic Books (see "2020 Eisner Award Nominees Announced") but did not win.
