Dark Horse has announced a new series by writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Tony Parker. Synthetics Volume 1 is a four-issue miniseries set on a dying planet Earth, where the remaining humans are filled with rage and despair as the final apocalypse approaches. A new type of human being, synthetic humans, appears to offer a ray of hope, but that depends on whether the other humans choose to accept them or turn on them. Synthetics Volume 1 #1 will be released on October 29, 2025, with a cover by Parker.

“The question most often asked in speculative fiction, but which is really at the heart of all storytelling, is: what does it mean to be human?” Straczynski said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “In our story, for the first time, synthetic humans have been created in order to save the human race from its own mistakes, and the ripple effect touches all of our characters: police, scientists, the press, the rich and powerful and all parts in-between. The ultimate question is, can the synthetics help us survive, and can we allow them to survive?”

Marvel Comics is releasing six one-shots by Straczynski that feature unlikely duos (see “Six Stand-Alone Marvel Stories from J. Michael Straczynski”).
