Animenation is reporting that Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell) and Tohokushinsha Film Corporation are working on a new version of the 1970s Yuushu Reideen ('Brave Reideen') TV series.  The original Reideen, which was directed byYoshiyuki Tomino (the principal creator of the long-running Gundam property), is one of those classic heroic giant robo anime series from the 1970s that were extremely popular in Japan and eventually made an impression here in the States (remember Shogun Warriors, which spawned a Mattel toy line and a Marvel comic).

Production I.G. is readying its Reideen remake for the spring 2007 Japanese TV season.  No word yet on when (or if) the new Reideen series will make it to the U.S., but, given the popularity of mecha anime with American audiences and the high quality of Production I.G.'s output, Reideen will likely be available here before too long.  Mitsuru Hongo, who helmed the IGPX and Candidate for Goddess anime series, is directing the new Reideen series.
