What is Free Comic Book Day (FCBD)?
FCBD is the biggest annual event in the comic book industry. On May 6, 2023, participating retailers will give away free comics to anyone who visits their brick-and-mortar store. Every year millions of comic books are given away in an effort to attract new customers to comic book stores worldwide. FCBD is organized and facilitated by Diamond Comic Distributors.
Joe Field established FCBD in 2001, inspired by Baskin-Robbins’s Free Cone Day. At the time, his California-based comics shop was located next to a Baskin-Robbins ice cream parlor. The first Free Comic Book Day occurred in 2002, coinciding with the release of the Spider-Man film.
