As the month winds up, we round up the latest geek movie news.
The Jurassic World sequel has revealed a poster and title via Twitter: Fallen Kingdom. The poster also recalls one of mathematician Ian Malcolm’s more quotable lines from the original Jurassic Park films, "Life finds a way." Malcolm himself will be returning to the franchise, with Jeff Goldblum reprising the role (see "'Masters of the Universe,' 'Revival,' 'Jurassic World 2,' 'Glass,' More"). Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard also return in the J.A. Bayona-directed film, which hits screens on June 22, 2018 (see "Best in Shows--Q2 2018").
Hidden deep within The Hollywood Reporter's interview with Paramount's Jim Gianopulos is the confirmation of a rumor about the World War Z sequel: David Fincher (Fight Club, The Social Network) will direct the Brad Pitt starrer. Gianopulos also revealed that the film is in "advanced development." The film was pulled from the Paramount’s schedule earlier this year, but a new release date has not been announced (see "'New Mutants,' 'Han Solo,' 'World War Z 2'").
In news that likely surprises no one, Spider-Man: Homecoming will have two sequels. Star Tom Holland confirmed the trilogy in an interview with French outlet Allocine, telling the interviewer, "Yes, there will be Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming 3." Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in theaters on July 7 (see "Best in Shows--Q3 2017"). Marvel is releasing a collection of Spidey’s greatest adventures this week and next as part of its True Believer line (see "Spider-Man Shares His Best Stories for $1").
Sony has announced a release date for The Angry Birds Movie 2: September 20, 2019 (via Variety) (see "Best in Shows--Q3 2019"). The release coincides with the 10th anniversary of the hugely popular videogame. Despite a rather mediocre 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the original film took in $350 million worldwide. The sequel will be co-directed by Thurop Van Orman (Adventure Time) and John Rice (King of the Hill, Rick and Morty).
Variety reports that Warner Bros. is pushing back its animated Scooby-Doo movie to May 15, 2020 (see "Best in Shows--Q2 2020"). Originally scheduled for September 21, 2018 (see "Warner Bros. Plans Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe"), Dax Shepard is in negotiations to co-direct. If signed, Shepard will join Space Jam helmer Tony Cervone. The film comes from the Warner Animation Group, which also produced The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie. In the meantime, anyone bereft about the delay can take consolation in the upcoming episode of Supernatural that will feature the cowardly canine (see "'Cowboy Bebop,' 'Supernatural,' 'Preacher,' 'Ant-Man' Shorts").
