'Renewed Dedication' to Core Retailers

Wizards of the Coast told retailers at the recently concluded GAMA Trade Show that it plans to implement a retailer co-op program later this year, in which WotC will subsidize advertising by hobby retailers.

Wizards of the Coast has eliminated 60 employees as part of a company-wide reorganization. While t he layoffs are quite wide-spread (ranging from senior VPs to game designers with considerable experience including Jeff Grubb and J.D. Wiker), the number of positions eliminated represents only 6% of WOTC's approximately 1000 employees.

Wizards of the Coast announced today that the company will take its franchise collectible card game, Magic The Gathering online. WOTC is hoping that Magic can cast its spell online, and will be able to compete with popular online games like Everquest , which have become huge cash cows --but some retailers are worried about the effect the online game will have on in-store sales.

We heard from a buyer for another specialty retail chain, who told us that while Gamestop was 'notorious' for breaking street dates, in this case his chain had also been shipped earlier than necessary to make the street date.
