The Meg, a years-in-the-making action fantasy about a mammoth prehistoric shark with a B-list cast of western actors led by Jason Statham, doubled its tracking numbers and took a $44.5 million bite out of the weekend box office.

After a solid, but somewhat underwhelming debut, given the film’s critical pedigree and pre-release buzz, the Tom Cruise-starring Mission: Impossible - Fallout demonstrated some strong staying power.

There is an even bigger element of “déjà vu” at the 2018 summer box office than is normal, even in sequel happy Hollywood. For the first time ever eight of the ten top films at the box office this weekend were sequels.

Genndy Tartakovsky’s Hotel Transylvania 3 easily topped the weekend box office with an estimated $44.1 million, but the Dwayne Johnson-starring disaster movie Skyscraper failed to meet expectations and the total of the top 12 films was down slightly from the same frame last year.

Marvel Studios' Ant-Man and the Wasp easily topped the weekend box office with an estimated $76 million. While this total was 33% more than the original Ant-Man's debut, it wasn’t enough to keep the total of the top 12 films from sliding down 10% from the same weekend last year.

As expected Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Disney’s Incredibles 2 remained atop the box office charts during the final weekend of what has been a very strong month of June with the summer box office tally now running 15.3% ahead of the same point last summer.

Jumpstarting a summer season that had stalled the with disappointing run of the Star Wars spin-off Solo, Brad Bird's Incredibles 2 soared well beyond expectations to debut with $180 million, the highest total ever for animated feature.
