With licensor Lafig gearing up the new Smurf brand for the hybrid live action-animation feature film from Sony (see “Here Come the Smurfs”), the Smurfs 50th birthday provided a marketing hook for a new Smurfs balloon, the first ever, in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year.
The balloon, 57 feet long, 28 feet wide, and 47 feet tall, will be accompanied by a float with a replica of one of the Smurfs’ mushroom shaped homes.
October 23rd is the 50th anniversary of the first appearance of the a Smurfs comic in the Belgian magazine Spirou on October 23, 1958.
