Variety is reporting that Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard) has signed on to direct an adaptation of Andy Diggle’s Vertigo comic, The Losers for Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures.  White, who is still working on an adaptation of Frank Miller’s Ronin (see “Ronin Gets a Director”), replaces Fantastic Four director Tim Story, who was previously attached to direct The Losers (see “FF Helmer Takes on The Losers”).

Diggles' The Losers takes its name, but little else, from the 1970s DC military comic written by Robert Kanigher about a group of hard luck GIs that was suffused with the jaded attitudes toward war that characterized the Vietnam War era.  Diggles' Vertigo comic, which ran from 2004-2006, features a black ops team that is double-crossed by their CIA handler.  Somehow they survive and attempt to find out why they were targeted and then get revenge.  James Vanderbilt has written The Losers screenplay.

For retailers, a film version of The Losers could prove to be a very good thing since there are 5 action-packed The Losers graphic novels to sell.  Variety is reporting that the financing of The Losers appears to be solid and the film is moving toward “an early 2009 production start.”
