Dynamite has announced that Batgirl and Birds of Prey scribe Gail Simone (see "Gail Simone Signs Exclusive With DC") will be penning a new ongoing Red Sonja series, beginning with issue #1 in July.  Walter Geovanni will handle the interior art while such creators as Nicola Scott, Colleen Doran, Jenny Frisson, Stephanie Buscema, and Fiona Staples will provide the covers.

To celebrate the occasion, Dynamite is giving away limited edition art prints by Nicola Scott at the Emerald City Comic Con this weekend in Seattle.

Red Sonja was created by Conan author Robert E. Howard for his short story, "The Shadow of the Vulture," which was published in 1934.  Her first comic book appearance was in 1973 in Conan the Barbarian #23, written by Roy Thomas with art by Barry Windsor-Smith.

Dynamite Entertainment has been publishing various one-shots and mini-series, as well as an earlier ongoing series starring the red-headed "She-Devil with a Sword" since 2005.  The ongoing series has been canceled in favor of the new version by Simone.
