Sailor Moon creator Naoko Takeuchi has announced that a live action Sailor Moon series will premier on the Tokyo Broadcasting System in October. Toei, the studio that produced the Sailor Moon animated series will also produce the live (or 'sentai') series. Toei promises lots of computer-generated special effects for the new series. Most of the previous live action 'sentai' series like Kamen Rider (or the better known Power Rangers) were targeted at boys, so this Sailor Moon series represents something of a departure from tradition, and demonstrates the enduring appeal of the property. The various Sailor Moon anime and manga series have spurred sales of more than $250 million worth of merchandise.
