Ed Sherman of Rising Sun Comics in San Diego, California writes in to share his thoughts on the 5-issue weekly miniseries Genius from Image Comics.
As I sit here finalizing my June Diamond order I come across what looks to be an interesting five issue miniseries from Image Comics called Genius. Unfortunately I will not be ordering this title for my store because Image expects me to order all five issues at once with no chance to adjust orders or any kind of returnability. It looks like they are taking a page from Marvel's playbook. Expecting a retailer to order five books in one month with no sales history is the most inconsiderate expectation that a publisher can make on a retailer. I'll wait for the trade, thank you, and order one copy to see if anybody wants it. The worst case scenario will be that I'll have to sell it at half price, and hence no risk to me.
I hope other retailers follow my lead so that hopefully this kind of business practice comes to an end.
