Much of this has to do with other media: As we pointed out last month (see "July 2023 Circana BookScan"), Nimona launched on Netflix on July 30, a new season of Heartstopper dropped on August 3, and a Five Nights at Freddy’s movie is slated for October. That seems to have given all three of these YA properties a bump. In July there were three volumes of Heartstopper in the Top 20, and in August all four were on the chart and had moved up to the top half. This series is likely to get even stronger with the release of Volume 5 in December (see "‘Heartstopper’ Update"). Meanwhile, the two volumes of Five Nights at Freddy’s stories move up the chart and Nimona drops to 19th place.
Dav Pilkey, of course, continues to dominate, with the number one title, Dog Man: Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea, as well as four other Dog Man books and one Cat Kid Comic Club.
While there are no August releases on the chart, one late-July title, Big Nate: No Worries! is at number 20. This volume is not a tie-in to the TV series, but a two-in-one bind-up of the older graphic novels; Big Nate is a perennial favorite.
