The title for the first standalone Star Wars film has been revealed, and details for Star Wars: Episode VIII have been announced.

The Gareth Edwards-directed standalone film will be titled Rogue One.  The film will star Felicity Jones  (see "'Star Wars' Stand-Alone Casts Female Lead"), and filming is set to begin shooting this summer in London.  It will release in theaters on December 16, 2016.

Star Wars: Episode VIII will be written and directed by Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper, The Brothers Bloom) and will debut in theaters on May 26, 2017, 40 years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. The date places it in a sequel-heavy month: after Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (May 2) and Terminator 2 (May 19), and the weekend before Fantastic Four 2 (June 2) (see "Best in Shows--Q2 2017").
