Topps has launched a new line of comics tied to Garbage Pail Kids with a unique business model.  Each issue will be sold (at a premium price) on its website for a limited period; the first issue is being sold for one week. 

Topps’ first comic in decades is Topps Comics – Garbage Pail Kids #1:  The Worst of 2016, which retails for $19.99 plus roughly $9 in shipping.  A slight discount is offered for five copies:  $89.99 plus the same shipping charge.

The comic is eight pages, written by Pat Barrett with art by Brent Engstrom.  Cover is by Joe Simko.  Each comic will come with two exclusive stickers, featuring GPK characters Grim JIM and Nervous REX, the characters featured in the comic.

Topps will begin selling the second issue on its website in a few days.

Topps has recently been experimenting with various direct-to-consumer product formats sold for limited periods.  It sold five cards tied to the first episode of Preacher on its website for 24 hours after the episode aired (see “Topps Launches Next Day Trading Cards”).  Topps seems to have settled on a sweet spot for price; the Preacher cards were also sold for $19.99
