"Nothing is happening on that right now,” NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke told The Hollywood Reporter. “We looked at some material; we decided at that point that it didn't warrant the reboot."
While the network is not presently behind the project, Salke didn’t rule out the possibility of reviving the project in the future, citing the character’s enduring popularity as a reason NBC would reconsider the project.
The reboot was announced in mid-2015 (see “NBC Prepping 'Xena: Warrior Princess' Reboot”). Writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost) left the project over creative differences a few months ago. Grillo-Marxuach had suggested he would explore a romantic relationship between Xena and her sidekick Gabrielle in the reboot, but whether that was a factor in NBC’s decision is unclear. The network didn’t relate anything further as to why they decided to table the project.
