Hermes Press will take a look at the company that would become DC Comics and collect classic 1950s Cold War tales in a pair of upcoming releases.

DC Comics Before Superman: Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson's Pulp Comics examines the publisher and works of National Allied Publications, the company that would become DC Comics. The full-color hardcover will hit store shelves about three weeks after Comic-Con International this July. The volume has an MSRP of $60.00.

DC Comics Before Superman will include an essay from historian (and Major’s granddaughter) Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson, an intro from Jim Steranko (Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and an afterward from Tom Andrae. The volume reprints painstakingly repaired 1930s pulps such as Barry O'Neill and Fang Gow (written by Wheeler-Nicholson with art by Leo O'Mealia), Blood Pearls (written by Wheeler-Nicholson with art by Munson Paddock), Foe of the Borgias (written and drawn by Sven Elven), The Golden Dragon (written and drawn by Tom Hickey), and more -- all from before Batman and Superman were a glimmer in Bill Finger and Jerry Siegel’s eyes.

Nuke 'Em! Classic Cold War Comics Celebrating the End of the World collects the complete runs of Atomic War! (1952) and World War III (1952), along with a historical essay and archival materials. These titles and played on the fears instilled by the Cold War, with stories about atomic war and global conflagration. The full-color hardcover will be in stores in mid-August for an MSRP of $49.99.

Hermes recently released a collection of another Golden Age treasure, Jack Kirby’s Sky Masters of the Space Force (see “Jack Kirby's Classic Sci-Fi Comic Strip Collected”).
