Ethel Muggs, a.k.a. Big Ethel, was the butt of jokes in the old Archie comics, but the world has changed and so has she: The Webtoon platform just announced that Big Ethel Energy, the webtoon about Ethel’s post-high school life, is returning with new episodes on February 21.

Created by writer Keryl Brown Ahmed and lead artist Siobhan Keenan, Big Ethel Energy is set after the Archie characters have graduated from Riverdale High. Ethel has moved to the big city and done her best to shake off her unhappy memories of high school, but she returns to Riverdale to write a history of the town. Although she initially sets out bent on revenge, she is surprised to learn that her classmates have matured as well. The second season will feature her romance with Moose Mason (another figure of fun in the old comics). New episodes of the series are released every Wednesday.

Big Ethel Energy launched in September 2021 (see “Archie Comics Rolls Out First Webtoon Series”) and was released in book form in August 2022 (see “‘Big Ethel Energy’ Gets Print Edition”).
