Steve Lafler’s Cat Head Comics will release Dog Boy Choice Cuts & Happy Endings, collecting comics from Lafler’s 1980s Dog Boy comics, in July. Introduced in Guts #3 in 1982, distributed by two forward-looking distributors that Lafler cites in the volume (Ron Turner of Last Gasp and Milton Griepp of Capital City Distribution), the character went on to star in his own comics. Dog Boy #1, published in March 1983, was also picked up by Dave Scroggy of Pacific Comics and soon Lafler had broad distribution throughout the Direct Market serving comic stores, as well as the head shops and record stores serviced by Last Gasp. Dog Boy was later published by Fantagraphics Books.
Meshing influences from Jack Kirby to underground comics, and “marked by a shattering ego-death experience behind psilocybin on the cusp of adulthood,” Lafler’s Dog Boy comics star “an unruly man-child equipped with a Golden Retriever head.”
The magazine-format comics will be collected in a 328-page 8-1/2” x 11” trade paperback, with b/w interior, at $36.99. The new volume will be distributed by Diamond Comic Distributors, Lunar Distribution, and Ingram, with a July 2023 release date.
