Chuck D, one of the founders of the hip-hop group Public Enemy, has turned his thoughts on violence in America into a graphic novel, Summer of HAMN: Hollowpointlessness Aiding Mass Nihilism, which will be published by Enemy Books in October 2023.  The book collects Chuck D’s sketches and written reflections on gun violence during the summer of 2022, including mass shootings and the attempt to murder writer Salman Rushdie.  The 244-page hardcover will be available in bookstores on October 3, 2023, and in comic shops on October 4, with an MSRP of $34.95.

Summer of HAMN is not Chuck D’s first venture into visual media; when he was a student at Adelphi University, he drew a cartoon called Tales of the Skind for the student newspaper, and more recently, he created a three-part variant cover for Matteo Pizzolo and C. Granda’s Rogue State (see “Public Enemy’s Chuck D Draws Variant Cover for ‘Rogue State’”).  His STEWdio: The Naphic Grovel ARTrilogy of Chuck D, was published in June 2023, also by Enemy Books, which is distributed by Akashic.
