Workers have won union elections at five related game stores/boardgame cafes in New York City, according to The New York Times. The stores, three Manhattan Hex & Co. locations, The Uncommons, also in Manhattan, and The Brooklyn Strategist, are connected by ownership.
The union involved is Workers United, an SEIU affiliate that’s been active in unionizing Starbucks locations. This contrasts with other recent hobby games and comics unionization efforts, which have ben organized by Communication Workers of America. That includes the union at brick and mortar and online retailer Noble Knight Games, which was recognized late last year (see “Game Retailer Recognizes Union”), the only other recent unionization effort at a retailer on which we’ve reported.
Other hobby game companies that have been unionized by CWA in recent years include Paizo (see “Paizo Recognizes Union”), and TCGplayer (see “Union Wins Election at TCGplayer”)
