Kristen McLean of Circana BookScan listed some of the fastest-growing manga properties, the series that are heating up as recent best-sellers such as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and My Hero Academia slow, at a ComicsPRO pre-conference webinar. In terms of unit sales, the fastest-growing manga series in 2023 were Blue Lock, One Piece, [Oshi No Ko], Villains Are Destined to Die (which is actually manhwa), Dandadan, and Tatsuki Fujimoto Before Chainsaw Man.

After three years of high growth, manga sales cooled in the first three quarters of 2023 but were still higher than in the first three quarters of 2019, Unit sales from January through August 2023 were down 27% from the same period in 2022, but up 351% from 2019. “What we accomplished in 2021 and 2022 is a whole new market for manga in the U.S.” she said. “And although we are off that high, I firmly believe we are not going back to 2019.”
