Small-screen news dominated showbiz this week, and we round it up here.

Marvel has released a trailer for upcoming Disney+ series Ironheart.  The series, exec-produced by Ryan Coogler, stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams.  The first three episodes are directed by Sam Bailey; episodes 4-6 by Angela Barnes (see "’Ironheart’ Gets Coogler").  Marvel announced the June 24 premiere date back in November 2024 (see "Marvel on Disney+"); three episodes will drop on that date.

The new series set in the universe of Buffy the Vampire Slayer now has cast Kiera Armstrong (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew) as the new vampire slayer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Armstrong will join original series star Sarah Michell Gellar, who’s playing Buffy and exec-producing the series.  Hulu gave 20th Television and Searchlight TV a pilot order earlier this year.  Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face, Fringe) are writing and exec-producing; and Chloe Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) will direct and exec-produce.

Krysten Ritter will one again play Jessica Jones, this time in the second season of Marvel’s Daredevil Born Again series for Disney+, according to Variety.  Ritter starred in the Netflix Jessica Jones series, which ran for three seasons between 2015 and 2019.  Marvel is slowing integrating the Netflix characters into its Disney+ television universe; a standalone special for The Punisher was recently greenlit (see "’The Punisher’ Special").

FX will premiere Noah Hawley’s new Alien: Earth series on August 12 with the first two episodes on both FX and Hulu, followed by one episode weekly for the next six weeks, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  The new series, set in 2120, the Corporate Era, when Earth is ruled by five corporations, has humanoid robots with artificial intelligence encountering mysterious life forms after a corporate spaceship crashes on earth (see "’Alien: Earth’ Teaser").

Paramount+ will premiere Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds with two episodes on July 17.  New episodes will then drop weekly, ending with the season finale on Thursday, September 11.  Two trailers have been released to date (see "’StarTrek: Strange New Worlds’ Trailer").  The new season will premiere around two years after Season 2.

Crunchyroll now has over 17 million paid subscribers as of March 31, parent Sony announced during a corporate strategy presentation.  When Sony acquired the streamer in 2021, it had 5 million subscribers (see "Sony Completes Acquisition").  Sony is now feeding new subscribers to Crunchyroll from its PlayStation Network, where customers can register for Crunchyroll from PS5.
