Adam Freeman of Brave New World Comics in Newhall, California sent us this Free Comic Book Day report:

Even in record-breaking rainfall, the customers, citizens, and curious of Brave New World Comics came out in force for Free Comic Book Day II.  By 9:30am, in the pouring rain, we had a rockin' DJ set up, a line around the corner, and two canopies in the parking lot.  As the morning progressed, we handed out 'early bird' prizes, played trivia games with the crowd, and marveled at the Ben and Jerry's truck pulling up to drop off ice cream.  As the rain ebbed and flowed, all of the volunteers and employees trickled in, we got set up, had a little pep talk, and opened the doors 5 minutes before 11 (at that point, the would-be customers were standing in a monsoon...), and the money makin' began!

Saturday, May 3rd proved to be one of the biggest sales days that BNW has ever seen.  Out performing the inaugural FCBD by 24%, ending the day at 6 times a normal Saturday.  Wow!  All comers had fun, despite inclement weather, and we were able to raise more than $300 for the Los Angeles County Library Literacy Project.  In addition to our Wheel of Death... I mean PRIZES, we set up a silent auction of some of the more interesting and rare items that were donated to us, including the Army of Darkness Ash Bust ($50), 10 autographed Hockey cards ($20), and a Magneto bust ($25), as well as 3 autographed Vampirella figures.  With all of the prizes, and swag, that were donated, the Wheel was a huge draw, all day long.  Luckily it was under one of the canopies!  We allowed the first 10 people in line a free spin, and that really got the crowd interested.  The DJ helped out by announcing our intentions, and how you could get a spin.  We intended for folks to make a small donation to the Literacy Project, spin the wheel and win a prize.  When we had the DJ announce that you could earn a free spin with any $10+ sale, that tactic seemed to rule the day.  People were clamoring to buy enough product to win a spin.

We saw hundreds of new faces, lots of old friends, current customers, and even sold our 500th club membership!  It was quite a day.

Now, we can't wait for next year.  Happy Free Comic Book Day!
