Ray Iniquez of Ray's Mini Video sent us his Free Comic Book Day story:

Rays Mini Video once again had an extremely good event with FCBD 2003.  First I had to check which books were out there and make the ordering decisions.  As soon as Diamond released the FCBD press release in late March I sent over 50 via e-mail and throughout late April I was resending them out to alert the public etc.

Once again, I also had FCBD advertised on the Mont Clare Elmwood Park Chamber of Commerce's moving sign so people would see about FCBD.  But besides that, and handing out over 600 flyers, I also mentioned Free Comic Book Day three times on the Kevin Matthews Radio show on WCKG 105.9 FM.  There were also numerous mentions on Video Rays Entertainment Cove DB under the student union at www.kevhead.com -- and lots of Kevheads expressed quite a bit of interest in FCBD!

My parents and I worked until the wee hours for weeks getting ready for the day.  If I didn't have my parent's help then I most likely would have yanked my hair out since I had so many things going.

Finally the day came!  I came into my store and waited for some help that we had coming.  My crew consisted of myself, my parents (Ray Sr. & Rose Marie Iniquez), my mom's sister (my Aunt Anna Rizzo), and my dad's brother (Uncle Tony 'El Twinkle' Iniquez).

Since 8:00 a.m. there were roving groups of kids going up and down the circle waiting for us to open.  Then we opened and the stream of people came in.  All were exited and we proceeded to hand out free comics as they browsed.  I escorted several customers to our basement annex, which had over 30 long comic boxes and over 20 half boxes filled with comic book back issues.  Several of our in stock action figures and some posters also were on display.  I had several people look at loose game cards and some newer comics, etc.  We had quite a few sales as well as several rentals -- after all, I am also a video retailer besides a direct comic book market store retailer.

I had a pleasant surprise when some fellow Kevheads from the Kevhead DB's stopped in for some free comics.  It was great to meet 'Wheels' and 'Wicked Annabella' and their son.  They made the trip from near Joliet to Elmwood Park just for Free Comic Book Day.

My relatives stayed till 6:00 p.m. and then my parents and myself handled everyone else that came in.  I had a father with a young daughter come in at 9:30 p.m. because she wanted to come and get her free comics and he promised, 'when I get home from work we will go to Rays.'

I had a great sale day the on Sunday I was a part of history.

All in all, it was a great event and I know it will help my bottom line for a long time by reminding people of all that I have to offer collectors etc.
