With the debut of Sandman: Overture #2 last week, some had hoped that the book would resume its planned bi-monthly schedule, but it seems that is not to be, Neil Gaiman told CNN.
Gaiman laid out the plan for the remaining issues, but only one had a planned release month. "July will be issue 3 and then probably some more months then issue 4, issue 5, and issue 6," he said. That sounds like at least two issues could slide into 2015, although he didn’t say so specifically.
The good news for Sandman fans was that Gaiman indicated that the door is not closed to more stories. "Can I tell Sandman stories until I die?," he said. "The characters are still in my head; they're still there. But there's so many more things I need to write before the long night comes, before I put the pen down for the last time. I really hope there's more Sandman in there. It would be sad if there wasn't. But there's so much more left to write."
Gaiman also shared that he had approached DC to do this story back in 2008, hoping to have it release for Sandman’s 20th anniversary, but "for various reasons, DC couldn't make it happen." He also said the scene from the end of the first issue of Sandman: Overture, with all the different versions of Morpheus meeting, "that’s been in my head for 24 years."
He also said he was impressed with Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s plans for the Sandman film (see "Geek Movie Round-Up") after a recent chat with him. "I had a fantastic day spent with Joe talking Sandman, and his knowledge and commitment to it impressed the hell out of me."
DC’s plan for marketing Sandman: Overture continues, see "'Sandman: Overture' Campaign Will Return for Graphic Novel."
