For the second month in a row, Nathan Pyle’s Strange Planet tops the list of the Top 20 Adult Graphic Novels in the book channel, based on NPD BookScan data for December (12/1/19-1/4/20) provided to ICv2.

In fact, the top three slots are the same, with the 2019 edition of Watchmen taking the number 2 slot and volume 1 of My Hero Academia just behind it.

The charts diverge after that, with volume 22 of My Hero Academia, the most recent volume, taking the fourth slot on the December chart.  It’s interesting that the first volume is outselling the newest one, but that may be due to holiday shopping or teens checking out the series over winter break.  At any rate, interest still seems to be high in this series.

VIZ Media takes 11 of the top 20 slots with seven volumes of My Hero Academia, the newest volumes of One-Punch Man and Dragon Ball Super, the one-shot No Longer Human (adapted by Junji Ito), and the first volume of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (see "‘Demon Slayer’ Picking Up Steam").  All the manga on this month’s chart are from VIZ.

There are just two superhero titles on this chart, the 2019 edition of Watchmen and Jonathan Hickman’s House of X/Powers of X (see "Paired Hickman X-Men Series Launch in July").

In the author realm, the fourth volume of The Walking Dead Compendium, which topped the chart when it was released in October, is still in the top 20 adult graphic novels for December.  Three more of the author titles are based on properties with strong niche followings. Pyle’s Strange Planet, a slim volume based on an Instagram comic, debuted in the top slot last month and stayed there this month.  The Adventure Zone, which is based on a Dungeons & Dragons podcast, has been on the chart since it came out in July.  And Critical Role: Vox Machina: Origins, volume 1, based on a webseries in which voice actors play D&D, marks its third month on the chart this month.

George Takei’s They Called Us Enemy has now been in the top 10 on this chart for six months, since its release in July.

New to the chart, and also very topical, is the graphic novel version of The Mueller Report.
