Dark Horse, the publisher behind the comic version of Rob Regner’s acerbic teenage character, is negotiating a deal with Amazon for an animated film. If negotiations are successful, Dark Horse’s Mike Richardson and Regner would have producer credits on the film.
It is unclear from the reporting whether Amazon Studios intends to release the film into theaters or directly onto their streaming video platform.
Dark Horse began publishing the Emily the Strange comics in 2005 after Regner’s sticker line featuring the character took on a life of its own. The immensely popular property has expanded into books and merchandise, including clothing, toys, and fashion accessories.
A film version of Emily the Strange has been a long-gestating project. The last option was for a live-action version starring Chloe Grace-Moretz (see “New Scribe for 'Emily the Strange' Film”), but Universal ultimately let the rights lapse.
