Rainbow Rowell, the acclaimed writer of Fangirl and Eleanor & Park, will be scripting the new Runaways comic for Marvel, reports Entertainment Weekly.

Kris Anka (Captain Marvel) draws the new ongoing, which will reunite most of the original cast from the series created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. Advance teasers have included Nico Minoru, Chase Stein, Karolina Dean, Molly Hayes, Gertrude “Gert” Yorkes (who’s presently dead, so we can probably expect a miraculous resurrection). And, yes, Old Lace the dinosaur will also be part of the fun.

The series will debut in September.

“This is my favorite Marvel book. When [editor Nick Lowe] first reached out to me a few years ago about maybe working for Marvel, it was the first thing I asked him about,” Rowell told EW. “Also the reason I wanted to write this book is because these characters feel related to my own. They resonated with me because that’s the kind of character I like to write,” she adds.

Rowell is revered among YA fans. Eleanor & Park was a Michael L. Printz Award recipient, won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for fiction, and was listed among the top ten best fiction novels for young adults by YALSA. Fangirl has been praised for its accurate portrayal of fan culture. Runaways isn’t her first work in comics -- she’s presently working on two titles with Faith Erin Hicks (see “YA Author Rainbow Rowell to Pen Two GNs for First Second”) -- but it is her first project with Marvel.

A live-action series based on the original Runaways comics was recently greenlit by Hulu (see “Hulu Orders 'The Runaways' to Series”). The core cast was announced in February (see “'Runaways,' 'Black Lightning,' and 'The Devil'”), and Buffy and Angel favorite James Marsters (Spike) heads the supporting cast (see “James Marsters in 'Runaways'”).
