There has been a lot of movement on geek film projects in the last few days, and we round up the news here.
Earlier this week, 20th Century Fox announced that its next two X-Men related films were being pushed back (see “'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' and 'New Mutants' Bumped by Queen Biopic”). Now, according to THR, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be undergoing reshoots. Apparently Simon Kinberg, who is directing for the first time, will be writing some new material to rework the third act. The reshoots will take place in late summer/early fall. The film is now set to open on February 14,2019.
Marvel Studios has begun principal photography on Captain Marvel. The production is shooting in and around Los Angeles, and will also shoot in Fresno, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel will follow Carol Danvers as she becomes a superhero when Earth is caught in the middle of two alien races galactic war. Release is planned for March 8, 2019.
Twentieth Century Fox has released a new international poster for Deadpool 2 that sees “DP” bringing in Domino and Cable for a group photo. Of course, being Deadpool, that means he’s got to annoy Cable and ruin the moment. The Italian text translates to “this time he does not come alone.” The film opens on May 18 (see “'Deadpool 2' Trailer Introduces X-Force”).
Hasbro’s Allspark Pictures and Paramount Pictures have tapped Zak Penn to write the live-action adaptation of its Space Knight ROM property, Deadline reported. Hasbro and Paramount announced their collaboration on a cross-property, interconnected film universe for its toy properties in 2015 (see “The '80s Toy Box Explodes Onscreen In Cross-Property Film Universe”). Penn, who has been screenwriting since he was 23 The Last Action Hero), just adapted Ready Player One for Steven Spielberg.
Elisabeth Moss has joined the adaptation of the DC/Vertigo crime comic The Kitchen, THR is reporting. New Line is adapting the comic series by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle that is set in Hell’s Kitchen, New York in the 1970s where the wives of Irish mobsters end up taking over the business after their husbands are arrested. The film will also star Tiffany Haddish and Melissa McCarthy (see “'Daphne and Velma,' Steampunk 'Oz,' 'Danger Girl,' 'Detective Pikachu,' 'The Kitchen,' 'Super Mario'”). The film will open in theaters on September 20, 2019.
THR is reporting Spike Lee is circling the Sony movie project based on the Marvel character Nightwatch. The script has been written by Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. Nightwatch is the alter-ego of black scientist Dr. Kevin Trench, who debuted in Web of Spider-Man #97. Nightwatch discovered his own corpse wearing a futuristic armor suit, which he proceeds to steal and fight crime with while trying to figure out how his future self ended up in his time.
Steven Spielberg has confirmed that Indiana Jones 5 will begin shooting in the UK in April 2019, Empire is reporting. Spielberg dropped the info in his recent acceptance speech for the Legend of Our Lifetime award at the Rakuten TV Empire Awards from Empire.
