Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are returning to monthly comics with their Eisner-winning series Criminal. The duo will launch the new Criminal series with a double-sized first issue on January 9.

Brubaker plans to use the flexibility of the monthly format to tell stories about Teeg Lawless and the rest of the Criminal gang with single issues or arcs of two or more issues. The new series will also include back-page articles and illustrations to immerse readers in the noir experience.

Criminal launched in 2006 under Marvel’s creator-owned Icon imprint (see “Brubaker's 'Criminal'”), and it won the 2007 Eisner Awards for best new series and best writer (see “DC Dominates Eisners”). A one-shot from Image Comics that marked the 10th anniversary of the series was nominated for an Eisner (see “The 2017 Eisner Award Nominees”). Brubaker and Phillips have also collaborated on The Fade Out (see “Image Announces 20 New Titles”), Kill or Be Killed (see “Barnes & Noble Names the Best Comics Of 2017”), and My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies, which recently came out in hardcover.
