Iceman, one of the founding members of the X-Men, will go solo in a new series, Astonishing Iceman, by writer Steve Orlando and artist Vincenzo Carratu. The series will begin right after the Hellfire Gala, which is the starting point for Marvel’s Summer Fall of X event  (see “‘X-Men: Hellfire Gala’ #1 One-Shot to Launch ‘Fall of X Event’”), and follows Bobby Drake, a.k.a. Iceman, as he sets out to become the newest protector of the earth. The first issue will go on sale on August 2, 2023, with a cover by Jesus Saiz.

“Have I not been saying my next Marvel project was cool as hell?” Orlando said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “Astonishing Iceman has been not just a joy, but a challenge, and the best possible kind....because the Fall of X means Iceman's life is more dangerous and harrowing than ever. But Bobby is a hero to the core, and there's no danger he's met in whose face he won't laugh. When it's more dangerous than ever to be a hero, that's when Iceman's at his most heroic!”

Iceman made his first appearance in 1963 in X-Men #1 but didn’t get his first ongoing solo series until 2017 (see “Marvel Reveals Details for New ‘Iceman’”).

Orlando is also writing X-Men: Before the Fall –Mutant First Strike #1, one of the prelude comics to Fall of X (see “Marvel to Kick Off ‘Fall of X’ with Four One-Shots”), while Carratu’s most recent Marvel work is Mary Jane & Black Cat (see “Mary Jane and Black Cat Team Up for Limited Series”).
