This week’s home entertainment releases, the final volley of 2018, include one last barrage of feature films including Ruben Fleischer’s highly enjoyable superhero/villain origin story, Venom , Paul Feig’s darkly comic mystery, A Simple Favor , Shane Black’s unsuccessful attempt to reinvigorate The Predator franchise, and Eli Roth’s adaptation of a classic children’s mystery/horror novel. DVD Round-Up will return in 2019—Happy New Years to all our readers.
'Aquaman' Still Boffo Overseas

For the thirteenth time this year a movie based on a Marvel Comics character has topped the weekend box office chart. Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse set a new December record for an animated film with a $35.4 million bow, while Aquaman continued to crush it overseas.

The big box office news this weekend didn’t happen in the fallow North American market where a re-release of Schindler's List was the only new entry with over 1,000 locations, rather it took place in the Middle Kingdom where Warner Bros. debuted its DC Comics-based Aquaman, which posted the fourth best opening ever for a superhero film in the Middle Kingdom.
